Mrs Rick’s Cupboard is pleased to invite you to our next exhibition, ‘Join the World’ by Jo Addison.
In Addison’s recent work, objects are loosened from their bearings in everyday life. Using materials that are provisional and close to hand, she makes things over and over, until something can be depicted by implication and reduction, rather than detailed description. Whilst the finished work is often made quickly, the requisite preparation is slow and repetitive. Resolute, yet ambiguous forms are navigated around language, and firm purpose or function is surrendered. Using only memory to recall forms, fixed meanings are abandoned to process, and decisions are governed by the behaviour of materials.
Addison graduated with BA (Hons) Fine Art from Norfolk Institute of Art and Design in 1992 and with H.Dip from Slade School of Fine Art U.C.L in 1995. Recent exhibitions include the solo show Not Trees and People, Tintype, London (2013) and selected group exhibitions include Unspecific Objects Malgras Naudet Manchester, The Royal Standard Liverpool, Easy does it David Dale Gallery Glasgow, Aid & Abet Cambridge, Supercollider Blackpool, House 62 Cranmer Rd, London, The Hope of Wrecks University of Hertfordshire Galleries, Museum of St Albans (all 2013).
