Press Release
Mrs Rick’s Cupboard is pleased to invite you to the second annual graduate exhibition, ‘Peeple’ by emerging artist Caroline Abbott.
Abbott explores the boundaries between imagination and reality, with the act of ‘play’ as a way to better understand personal anxieties. By painting and animating scenes that she creates using hand-made models and make-shift sets, Abbott aims to reveal some truths behind her own way of seeing the world.
The uncanny, the absurd, and anxiety are explored through the creation and animation of figures. Reducing people to archetypes and simplifying situations and movements suggests a child-like attempt at grasping a situation and presents a fiction of being in control of events. Tensions between imagination and reality are explored through the projection of ‘character’ onto the figures while at the same time maintaining a strong awareness of their construction. Abbott’s practice combines painting, animation and sound to produce effects which are playful and menacing, naïve and savage, nostalgic and strange.
In previous animations she has explored the effect of the removal of narrative in film, whereas in this new piece of work entitled ‘Peeple’, made specifically for the unique space which is Mrs Rick’s Cupboard she explores the often cyclical or repetitive nature of human behavior with actions taking place which are subsequently undone or redone. The physical presence of the sets alongside the animation aims to encourage the viewer to expand further on that which is presented in the films.
