Press Release Mrs Rick’s Cupboard is pleased to invite you to our next exhibition, ’SULK’ by artist, Hannah Knox.
A space for sulking. Hats pulled down moping, brooding, face to the wall. Out of sorts, twisted ankles. Here a collection of soft sculptures and mismatched items inhabit Mrs Rick’s Cupboard, these silent anthropomorphic objects morose and pining are often humorous in their grumpy convictions and resentments. Success and Failure are common themes within Knox’s practice, recent works such as Champion/noipmahC plays with the idea of a reversal of a hero. The studio is the perfect site for this type of exploration, a place of doubt and self-reflection, were works may be destroyed, replaced or discarded.
Knox’s paintings and sculptures are made from a selection of fabrics and cloths, ostensibly unpainted they are stained, poured, dipped, printed or sprayed. Shape-shifting they fall from the ceiling, hang out on the floor or gather themselves up to make a stand-in body in the room; actively embracing the world beyond the wall.
Hannah Knox lives and works in London. She completed her MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in 2007. Recent commissions include Reproduction for Common Property, at the Jerwood Space, London, UK, 2016. Solo exhibitions include Tempur, CSM Project Space, London, UK, 2015; ’BUFF’, Ceri Hand Gallery, London, UK, 2013; ‘Stoffbilder’, Take Courage, London, 2012. Group exhibitions include: Autocatalyticfuturegames, No Format, London UK, 2015; Reproduction Failure, Slate Projects, London, UK, 2014; Art Britannia, Madonna Building, Miami, USA 2013.
